About Autism on Vacation

Welcome to Autism on Vacation, a sister site to my main travel blog Mama’s on Vacation

About Heidi

I’m Heidi, a mom from Ontario who loves vacation planning, and the primary writer for Autism on Vacation. I have two daughters, Zen and Brie.

During the day, I work as an Early Childhood Educator at a before and after school program. In addition to being an ECE, I’ve also done a lot of professional development related to autism- including taking college courses in Autism and Behavioural Sciences.

And now, I’m taking online courses in Travel in Tourism, to work towards becoming a travel agent. Once I’m done the course and have my TICO certification, I plan to become a Certified Autism Travel Professional™, so I can specialize in helping families plan trips that will be the best fit for the autistic traveller.

About Brie

Brie is 18 years old and autistic. She has been enjoying traveling since she was a month old. Her favorite destination so far has been Disney World, and her attraction to visit is a water park (with amusement parks coming in close at second).

While Brie is verbal, her speech is severely delayed. This makes it hard for her to communicate her experiences fully, but I will do my best to help find the right words so that we can share her experience from our travels too.

What you can expect from Autism on Vacation

Travelling with an autistic child was a real learning curve for me. There’s so much more to consider when booking a room, planning a day at a theme park, and just trying to figure out if your child is going to like a destination when that child has autism.

Our goal on Autism on Vacation is to share what we’ve learned to make traveling with autism easier, share the mistakes we’ve made (and no doubt will continue to make) on the way, and to rate the destinations and attractions we visit for how autism friendly they are.

On Autism on Vacation, you’ll find

  • Autism specific travel guides
  • Autism-friendly ratings with detailed posts for attractions, event, and accommodations
  • Tips for travelling with autistic children, teens, and adults.
